Questions

Things people ask before they walk in.

01Do you have classes for total beginners?

Yes. Tuesday and Thursday at 6:15pm are dedicated beginner classes, and our all-levels classes are structured so newer students are never thrown into the deep end.

02Do I need to be in shape first?

No. The program scales to any fitness level. We have members starting in their 50s and 60s. Show up; we'll meet you where you are.

03Will I actually learn self-defense?

Yes. BJJ's ground-focused techniques are applicable from the very first class. You will leave the first session knowing more than 99% of people on the street.

04Is there a free trial?

Yes. Reserve a class through the form below or text Miranda at 512-635-5438 to book your first session at no cost.

05Is the environment safe?

Yes. Students are grouped by level. We enforce a no-meathead policy — anyone who can't control themselves doesn't train here.

06Will I have to spar right away?

No. Sparring is limited in Level 1. By the time you're rolling live in Level 2+, you'll have the tools to do it safely.

07Can I train with the head professor?

Yes. The owners are in every class — drilling, rolling, teaching. That's a deliberate choice.

08Can I compete?

Yes. Our coaches have IBJJF, Pan-Am, and World Championship experience and we run a competition team for anyone who wants to test themselves.

09Are there age restrictions?

No upper limit. We adapt training for any physical limitation. If you can move, we can train you.

10How many people are in a class?

Enough to always find a good training partner, never so crowded that you're lost. Classes are coached, not just supervised.

11When can I start?

Immediately. Our curriculum is rolling — there is no semester to wait for.

I've been trying to find a comfortable home for Jiu Jitsu over the years and think I finally find my home at Johns. Great for folks of all levels, they'll push you but also make sure you understand what you're doing at a pace that is appropriate for your skill and fitness level. Recommend for anyone.

I have been taking my child here for the kids classes for the last few months and it has been great. Not only is a great physical activity for him, but it helps develop important developmental resilience. The coaches are amazing and they really help with the kids to understand and have at least 1 coach per group of kids. Can’t say enough about how happy we are with John’s Gym and we look forward to seeing the progress of our child.

If you are looking for a gym that embodies the term family, then this is where you need to train. The coaches are absolutely amazing, from beginner to advanced level BJJ the training is mentally and physically challenging. There are 3 Johns gym facilities, I have trained at all of them, and I can assure you they are all worth checking out. The Georgetown gym is a very dynamic training facility due to the MMA classes they offer along with their BJJ programs. If you are looking for a gym that will challenge you, and push you to your limits this is the place. Drop by and see for yourself.

John’s Gym Georgetown has been such a positive experience for our daughter for the past two years. Their knowledge, compassion for the kids, and consistent methods of teaching has been top notch. Wonderful instructors, staff and families as well.

We came visiting and we were looking for a gym for son to practice. We were very pleaseantly surprise. The practice was very well run by Jason. The kids seemed very receptive to him and listening well to the instructions. Which shows a good raport between the kids and the coach. My son enjoyed his time there. The building doesn't say much from the outside, but inside is well lit, organized and cleaned. They protect the mat which is very important.

John's Gym in Georgetown has been an incredible place for our family. My daughters, Hazel and Violet, have been training here for over two years, and the experience has been outstanding. Coach JJ creates an environment that balances discipline, hard work, and encouragement.

Two of our kids (7&5) attend John's Gym and they LOVE it. I am very picky about the coaches, teachers, etc that I will allow to have influence with my kids, so when we were on the hunt for somewhere to train, I was thorough.

We have been attending John's Gym for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nearly three years. From the beginning, we have loved the family-friendly environment and Coach JJ's approach to teaching kids.

I've really enjoyed training jiu-jitsu at the gym. It's incredibly well-organized, and everything from the classes to the facilities runs smoothly. What stands out the most is how welcoming everyone is.

After attending 4 different BJJ gyms, this is by far my favorite. The skill level is diverse — a good fit for veterans and entry-level grapplers. Classes are well-structured, with a new theme every week. Coach John and Coach Chad are exceptional. Highly recommend.

I'm not sure I can accurately express the shift we have seen in our son. He takes Jiu Jitsu seriously. The guidance from the coaches is remarkable — and it transcends to life off the mats.

Nothing but good things to say about the instructors — they are first class. The class times work for working adults. Huge plus.
